NEW YORK (OCN) — Here are four (4) tips to prevent yourself from being mugged.
1. Never carry or expose large amounts of cash in public. Men should keep their wallet in their front pocket or your shoulder pocket (if you are wearing a coat or blazer). Females, when taking along a purse, make sure that it is securely closed and do not let it loosely drag around your shoulder.
2. Avoid any confrontations especially with large crowds as someone will try to take your belongings when you are not paying attention.
3. Do not display any cell phone, music player or jewelry. If you do have them with you, do not sit close to any open door on the subway or buses as that is how they can snatch your items quickly from their observance.
4. If approached by stranger asking you for directions and they want to talk to you alone, keep walking. If possible, always travel with a friend or family member.
If you happen to be mugged, notify the police immediately and provide the discription of the suspect. If any items were taken (credit card, bank atm), notify the agencies to cancel the cards immediately so the thieves will not be able to use them.
