Did you know that you can report crimes using text messages?
To report crimes by text message, you can text your message to “CRIMES” or “274637” from your cell phone using “TIP577” inside the beginning of the message. Currently, Nassau County is the only area lacking this service but may adopt it in the future.
By adding the “TIP577” in the message, it will create an alias to ensure anonymity for you. If you are later in a situation where you will be harmed if you are discovered texting, you can send “STOP” which will keep you from receiving further replies from law enforcement. Please keep in mind that you service may charge you for outgoing and incoming text. Also, law enforcement may prefer calls in some situation as they interact better with you.
