Quite a few supermarkets in the USA have a bakery on their premises so if you are a young couple on a very tight budget or is having a very large gathering at the reception and will need enough cake for everyone, the supermarket’s customized cakes could prove an inexpensive yet tasteful option for you and your guests.
Taxing the Cake
Are there sales tax on wedding cakes? Well, it depends on how you will be receiving the wedding cake. Wedding cakes picked up from a local grocer or local bakery are not subject to sales tax unless they also provide to you utensils (such as plates, forks or serving utensils) as part of the price for the wedding cake so try and obtain your own utensils if possible. Wedding cakes that are sold and served by your caterer are unfortunately taxable as prepared foods. Are you supplying your own homemade wedding cake? Be aware that your caterer may charge you a per person fee for cake cutting and the serving to your wedding guests so be sure to review your contract with them.
Preserving the Cake
No matter how big or small the wedding or the cake is, there is a very good chance that you will want to save a piece of the cake “for as long as you both shall live” or until your first anniversary celebration. If you plan to do so, you will need to make preperations before thinking about what kind of cake that you are getting since you will be needing an air tight container that can fit some cake or cut to the size of the container. Second, you will need to store the cake on refrigeration as soon as it is cut to preserve the freshness. Third, if you are living outside of the State of New York, consider how you will get it transported home unless you will be leaving it with family who reside in New York and will see on your anniversary.
