Accommodation in New York

I & my wife are moving from Europe to New York for higher studies. I'm a doctor age 34, and my wife is a Economist age 23. We are looking for a Host Family, or an apartment share accommodation without smokers, actors and pets.
We prefer areas around Columbia, but our priority is safety and cleanliness of the area. Our motive is to stay with native New Yorkers who could help us learn living in New York.
We'll be arriving in New York around 20th June, a little earlier than our studies begin in September.
Please write to us with information about your accommodation, family and rent expectations.

You can use this Google Search link to see what is available on CraigsList.
I would budget $800 to $1000 each for rent if you share and more if you rent on your own.

The area around Columbia can be pretty small so please keep that in mind since it will be the two of you.
I haven't heard of much shares in the area but you should look on some broker websites for short-term leasing.
This link on NYHabitat.com should be of help then when you get settled, try to find the perfect place.
See you around the forums.

I then came across this forum and applied for the membership and soon got it.
Now I am very satisfied as I got what I was looking for. Thanks guys.

My suggestion would be to arrive a week earlier, get an idea of the areas you want to live in and have a look at the places before.
NY is so a bustling city, where you always can find something.
