Unlimited Ride MetroCards
Do you have Unlimited Ride MetroCards? Unfortunately, the unlimited ride MetroCard can not be shared and each person has to purchase their own Metrocard for travel. Once an unlimited ride Metrocard is used, it is locked out for approximately eighteen (18) minutes at that station (or bus line) and any use during this period of time, the rider swiping will received a message indicating that the Metrocard had already been used.

Pay Per Ride MetroCards
Unlike the Unlimited Ride MetroCards, Pay Per Ride MetroCards can be shared up to four (4) people making it a choice for most group riders.

Student MetroCards
Student MetroCards are only for use by the student to whom it was issued and whose name is written on the card. These MetroCards are good for travel to and from school and school-related activities between 5:30AM and 8:30PM. Using it at 8:45PM (or 5:15AM) could cause problems for you so have some change handy to avoid a fine for fare evasion.

If you need to get you hands on a MetroCard, they are available at machines and local merchants in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, New Jersey and the counties or Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester.

Fines
The MTA’s Fare Evasion penalty has increased from US$60.00  to US$100. The increase, the first in 20 years, was unanimously approved by the full MTA Board at its June 25, 2008 meeting as has been effect Monday, July 7th, 2008. Offenders who are caught are subject to a summons and/or arrest which is punishable under the laws of New York and New Jersey under code 1050.4 of the MTA NYC Transit’s Rules of Conduct.

Credit Cards
Are you an International visitor? When a credit card is used at an MetroCard Vending Machine, the MVM will ask you to enter your zip code for verification.  However, if your credit card account has a billing address outside of the United States, you are not subject to the zip code verification requirement.  Instead, type in “99999″ when prompted for a zip code.  This will indicate to the MVM that an international credit card is being used, and the regular transaction authorization process will still take place.

Q: Who is eligible to donate?
A: Donors must be at least 17-years-old and weigh at least 110 pounds.

In New York State and Pennsylvania, 16 year olds are eligible to donate blood provided they have an original signed or faxed copy of the New York State Informed Parental Consent for a 16-Year-Old to Donate Whole Blood. To obtain a copy of this form, please click here.

Q: What should you do before donating?
A: We want your donation experience to be pleasant, so please remember:

Eat a well-balanced meal and drink plenty of fluids before donating.
If possible, avoid aspirin for 48 hours prior to donating.

Q: How does the blood donation process work?
A: Donating is usually safe, simple and takes about 45-90 minutes. Supplies are sterile, used only once, and then incinerated. The actual donation process works like this:

You will complete the donor registration form that includes your name, address, phone number social security number, etc.
You will be asked a few questions about your health.
You will receive a mini-physical, including blood pressure, temperature and pulse. In addition, a drop of blood will be obtained from your finger to test for anemia (iron level).
You will proceed to a donor bed where your arm will be cleaned with an antiseptic.
During the donation process, you will donate about one pint of blood. This takes about 6-10 minutes.
Following your donation, you will receive refreshments in the hospitality room or canteen.
Donating blood is simple, and your gift of life may help as many as 3 people.

Q: What should you do after donating?
A: Please observe the following suggestions:

Eat well for the next 24 hours.
Increase your fluid intake for the next 24-48 hours.
Do not smoke or chew tobacco for 30 minutes.
Avoid strenuous physical exertion, heavy lifting or pulling with the donation arm for about two hours.
People seldom experience discomfort after donating. However, if you feel light-headed, lie down until the feeling passes. If some bleeding occurs after the removal of the bandage, apply pressure to the site and raise your arm for 3-5 minutes. If bruising or bleeding appears under the skin, apply a cold pack periodically to the area of bruising during the first 24 hours, then warm packs periodically.

Plasma – The liquid part of the blood, is usually kept frozen and can be stored for up to one year. Plasma may be administered to patients with clotting problems.

Platelets – Cause clotting when cuts or other open wounds occur. Donated platelets expire after five days. Leukemia and transplant patients often need platelet transfusions.

Q: Will it hurt when the needle is inserted?
A: Only for a moment. Pinch the fleshy, soft underside of your arm. That pinch is similar to what you will feel when we put the needle in your arm.

Q: Is it safe to give blood?
A: Yes. Sterile procedures and disposable equipment are used. Each donor’s blood is collected through a new, sterile needle which is then discarded.

Q: What does the Red Cross do with my blood?
A: The blood will be delivered to a blood component laboratory at the Red Cross, where it is processed into several components (e.g., red blood cells, platelets, plasma, etc.). A single blood donation can help as many as three different patients.

Q: Does the Red Cross pay blood donors?
A: No. All Red Cross blood donors are volunteers who generously give blood out of a spirit of altruism.

After walking to the Main Terminal B, take the West Side Broadway M60 bus to East 125 Street and Second Avenue. The trip will last twenty (20) to thirty (30) minutes.

Exit at East 125 Street and Second Avenue so that you may transfer to the South Ferry M15 bus. The M15 bus will take about forty (40) to forty-five (45) minutes to reach Second Avenue.

Buses:
You will need to obtain the New Jersey Transit 114 bus. The NJT 114bus, which will be heading to the Bridgewater, can be obtained  from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) located near the corner of 41st Street and Eight Avenue.

On the NJT 114, you will travel for approximately 45 minutes to the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Morris Avenue.

Once at Mountain and Morris, exit the NJT 114 bus so you may transfer to the New Jersey Transit 70 bus which will take you to the Short Hills Mall near the Saks Fifth Avenue entrance. The ride on the NJT 70 bus will last approximately 30 minutes.

Trains:
Travellers may also take the train from New York Penn Station to Summit then transfer the NJT 70 bus so they can be dropped near the Saks Fifth Avenue entrance at the Short Hills Mall.

Taxi:
Do you have deep pockets? Plan to spend over US$60.00 for the trip with the distance, waiting and tolls.

Central Park (Status: Active)
Central Park in New York has a five hour curfew which is in effect from 1:00 AM until 6:00 AM. The purpose of the curfew is to save the lives of homeless people who might freeze to death being in the open of the park during cold months and can not be neglected or refused under Section 1-03 of the parks rules and regulations. If caught, this is what you face.

Radio City Music Hall (Status: Active)
The Radio City Music Hall has a curfew usually around 11:00 PM. Guest attending should be aware of this since their performance could be cut short. If allowed to stay after curfew due to a late performance, it is important not to wait to long to leave to have problems with security.

Walden Galleria (Status: Active)
The Walden Galleria in New York has instituted a Parental Escort Policy on Fridays and Saturdays between the hours of 4:00 PM and closing. Anyone under the age of 18 visiting Walden Galleria must be accompanied by a parent or guardian 21 years of age or older. One parent or guardian (21 years of age or older) is permitted to supervise up to five teens. Teens must remain within the company of their parent or guardian. Acceptable proof of age is a driver’s license, state/provincial non-driver ID, military or college ID, passport or visa. This policy does not apply to the cinemas or stores with exterior entrances.

IN NEW JERSEY

West New York (Status: Suspended 1999)
West New York located in New Jersey has a curfew that is implemented on teenagers. The ordinance provides exceptions for juveniles traveling to or from work, engaged in a medical emergency or traveling to or from events sponsored by community or religious organizations. New York teens visiting West new York, NJ should be aware as violators and their parents/guardians are subject to fines of up to US$1,000, and up to 90 days community service.

Asphalt Green,‎ which is located at 1750 York Avenue, has an indoor basketball court and is located between East 90th Street and East 91st Street. They offer sports, fitness and health programs to members, individuals and institutions. Located in the Murphy Center, their gym includes a basketball court, a suspended running track and a seating area.

Long Island
Unable to verify indoor court and fees in Long Island before January 1, 2009.

Manhattan
The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers at 60 Chelsea Piers has multiple basketball courts along with pools, track and more.

Queens

Q: Does the Bronx Zoo have age restrictions?
A: Yes! The the Bronx Zoo has age restrictions. Any visitor under the age of 17 must be accompanied by a chaperone (or occasionally chaperon) in the Bronx Zoo. Those attending in a school group should see those restrictions.

Q: Is there a parking fee at the Bronx Zoo?
A: Yes! The Bronx Zoo charges for parking. All-day parking for cars is US$12.00 (previously US$10.00) and buses are US$16.00. If you have the WCS membership, the parking fee is waived.* Also, during summer months, the Bronx River Parking lot (Gate B) fills up early and traffic is redirected to the Southern Boulevard parking lot (Gate C). This requires cars to exit the Bronx River Parkway at Exit 7W, Fordham Road. After the blinking light, exit right. At top of exit ramp, make a left onto Southern Boulevard. Gate C can be found at 182nd Street.

Q: What are the hours for the Bronx Zoo?
A: The Bronx Zoo is open 365 days a year and can be visited Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Holidays, Saturday and Sundays, the hours are extended until 5:30 pm. Tickets will be sold up to half an hour before closing.

Q: Can I smoke at the Bronx Zoo?
A: Yes! You are allowed to smoke at the Zoo but smoking is permitted in designated areas only as The Bronx Zoo is a smoke-free park

Q: Can I feed the animals in the Bronx Zoo?
A: No! Do not feed the animals (unless instructed) or throw things in exhibits. Also, you should stay on public paths at all times.

Q: Can I touch the animals and plants in the bronx Zoo?
A: For your safety, please respect and leave untouched the plants and native wildlife around you while attending the Bronx Zoo.

Q: Can I bring my pet to the Bronx Zoo?
A: Pets are not permitted. Guests who rely on service animals may bring them into the Zoo, provided that the animals remain properly leashed. Guests are solely responsibility for the care and control of their animals.

Q: Can I bring food to the Bronx Zoo?
A: Yes! However, you must eat and deposit your trash in designated areas. Food, for your convenience, is also sold at the Zoo.

Q: Can I bring my scooter to the Bronx Zoo?
A: Radios, bikes, skateboards, or scooters are not permitted in the Zoo. Also, playing ball and weapons of any kind are not allowed in the Zoo.

Q: Can I walk barefoot in the Bronx Zoo?
A: No! Shirts and shoes are required at all times.

Q: Are there rules on photography at the Bronx Zoo?
A: Non-commercial photography for personal use is allowed, but tripods are restricted in several exhibits, and at the discretion of zoo staff. Commercial photography and filming requests must go through the Communications Department. Please send your request to pr@wcs.org. Also, during your visit, you may be photographed by a WCS employee or authorized guest. Your admission at the Bronx Zoo serves as permission for use of your image by these parties.

Q: I can only visit the Bronx Zoo on Wednesday, what should I do?
A: If you can only visit on Wednesday and have a short stay in the State of New York and wish to avoid waiting in any long lines, you should arrive early or go to the Bronx Zoo Online Discount page where you can make an online donation (currently US$15.00) which allows you to avoid waiting in line at the Admission Booths.

Q: What does the Bronx Zoo do with our money?
A: Every dollar you donate or spend supports wildlife conservation and helps care for animals at the Bronx Zoo and around the world.

Q: Can I visit the Bronx Zoo on weekends or holidays?
A: You are free to visits the Bronx Zoo 365 days a year.

Q: Does the Bronx Zoo take Credit Cards?
A: Yes! The Bronx Zoo accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express. There is also Bank of America ATMs on site. If you have a Bank of America Card, use it to gain get free admission.

Q: How do I get from Queens to the Bronx Zoo?
A: To get from Queens to the Bronx Zoo, you should take the Q44 Bus from Queens to East 180th Street and Boston Road in the Bronx. Exit the Q44 Bus and walk a few blocks to the Zoo (20-30 minute walk) or wait and then transfer to the BX09 Bus located further along on East 180th Street.

Q: Is the pay-one-price ticket worth it?
A: The all-in-one or pay-one-price ticket is worth it if you do all the special exhibits so plan to arrive early.

Q: What rules should I know about the Bronx Zoo?
A: The Bronx Zoo reserve the right to inspect packages, bags, and containers, the right to escort from zoo grounds any individuals or groups who are acting in ways deemed harmful to our animals or the park, or that impinge upon the enjoyment of the park by other guests and videotape or photograph you during your visit.

Q: What are/were POP Tickets?
A: POP (Pay One Price) Tickets is the former name for the Total Experience Tickets.

A: Yes! ATM’s (Automatic Teller Machines) maintained by Bank of America are available at the Bronx Zoo.

*You must arrive a the zoo with your parking pass received with the WCS membership. This can be ordered by mail, online or via phone and takes 3 to 4 weeks. If you purchase it at the admission booth after you paid for parking, you will not get credit towards the parking.

The Office of Children & Family Services (OFCS) in New York says that “some children are responsible, intelligent, and independent enough to be left alone at 12 or 13 years of age.

Likewise, there are some teenagers who are too irresponsible or who have special needs that limit their ability to be safe if they are left alone.”

If you consider yourself intelligent and independent enough to live alone in New York you should know that minors (those under 18 years of age) can’t sign the rental agreement which is a binding contract due to their age.

If one is emancipated, they could sign the lease, however, the minor can “disavow” the lease which the landlord can be held to the lease agreement. With that said, landlords will be less inclined to rent to minors.

You will then need the assistant of an adult to sign the lease. This should be done after you check with city you plan to stay and county that it is located in.

Before you move into your new residence, take detailed photos. When you need to move away from your residence, your photos can show the condition you received it compared to the photos while leaving and can aid in helping to get your security deposit back should you need to go to small claims court.

The Hammerstein Ballroom does not allow (still or video) cameras or any (audio or video) recording equipment. If you are discovered by security, you will be “asked to leave” but will not have an option to comply or refuse.

At Madison Square Garden (MSG), video cameras, monopods, tripods, audio recording devices and cameras with telephoto or zoom lenses are not permitted inside Madison Square Garden at any time. This policy will be strictly enforced. You may bring in a disposable or 35mm camera (with no zoom or telephoto lens), however, for some events, cameras of any type and/or flash photography may be prohibited so be sure to call ahead.

Majestic Theatre
The Majestic Theatre does not allow (audio or video) recording devices in the theatre along with still cameras.

Marquis Theater
The Marquis Theater does not allow any recording devices inside the theatre. This includes devices that capture still, video and audio.

Metlife Building
The MetLife building is considered a “sensitive building” so if you are trying to take photos, you may be approached by security and asked not to do so.

Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Still cameras are allowed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art but movie/video cameras are prohibited. The use of flash on still cameras are not permitted and you are prohibited from taking photos of private collections on your visit. Why no flash? Some paintings can be slowly destroyed by constant flash photography. Flash from a camera is similar to leaving the artwork out in the sun. Also, it is hard to appreciate the art in any kind of serenity with constant flashing every few seconds.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority
While in New York utilizing the transportation system, please note that photography, filming or video recording in any facility or conveyance is permitted (under MTA’s Rule of Conduct 1050.9 (c)) except that ancillary equipment such as lights, reflectors or tripods may not be used. If you are a member of the press and is holding a valid identification issued by the New York City Police Department, you are authorized to use necessary ancillary equipment.

Nokia Theatre
Are you able you take pictures at the Nokia Theatre? Well, this depends on the artist(s) that are appearing. It’s best to contact (via e-mail) guest services on the day of the show for further information.

Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty permits camera use at Liberty Island, however, certain size backpacks, suitcases and carry-on luggage that you may try to use to protect your camera equipment will not be allowed. To be accepted, the item should fit inside a milk crate.

St James Theater
The St James Theater does not allow any recording devices inside the theatre. This includes devices that capture still, video and audio.

Radio City Music Hall
At Radio City Music Hall, Video cameras/recorders are strictly prohibited and this policy will be strictly enforced. For the Christmas Spectacular and other family events, 35mm and digital cameras will be permitted, however, you must refrain from taking pictures during the performance as it is distracting not only to the performers, but your fellow guest as well.

Rockefeller Center
Rockefeller Center possesses trademark rights with respect to certain images commonly associated with Rockefeller Center (e.g., the Christmas Tree, Atlas, Prometheus) and these images may not be used without the express consent of either RCPI Landmark Properties, L.L.C., or Tishman Speyer Properties, and must also be properly identified as trademarked property.

Terminal 5.
At Terminal 5, you may or may not be able to bring your non-professional camera as it is usually determined on the day of show as the photo policy of the artists who appears at Terminal 5 varies. It is best to call 1-212-582-6600 on the day of the show to find out if you may bring it.

The Dakota
The Dakota has been showed on still and motion picture but the building does not allow filming on the interior of the building but allows it on the exterior.

The Filmore New York
At the Filmore New York, located at Irving Plaza, point and shoot digital cameras are allowed when approved by the artist performing. Any cameras with removable lenses and/or professional cameras (including digital SLR) must be checked at coat check unless you are issued a photo pass. Please note that the photo passes are not issued by The Fillmore NY located at Irving Plaza but rather through the band/label/management so they should be contacted well in advance before the performance.

United Nations Headquarters
When visiting the United Nations Headquarters, no camera equipment is permitted in the Delegates North Lounge and all camera crews accessing the premises with equipment must use the Visitors Entrance between 08:00 (8:00AM) and 19:00 (7:00PM) hours daily.

All other times, they may enter through the 42nd Street Entrance. TV camera crews must remain on the upper level of the stakeout area at all times when the Security Council is in session, unless escorted by MALU.

The lower level is reserved for UNTV, print/broadcast media and still photographers. However, media will have unescorted access to the extended area of the Security Council stakeout, on the North side of the North steps. [This is to be implemented provisionally on a trial basis and its sustainability reviewed by the Standing Committee.]

Photo ops are limited to one minute maximum and if there is a large presence of visual media present, they will be taken in two batches: first, the photographers, to be followed by the TV camera crew, or vice versa. MALU personnel will always be present at the photo ops. No questions are permitted during these photo ops.

Yankee Stadium
While you are at Yankee Stadium watching a game and grabbing a hotdog, you should know that single-frame flash photography is permitted, however, tripods, extended length zoom lenses, other professional camera equipment, movie cameras and any other video or audio recording equipment are not permitted in Yankee Stadium. Also, you are not permitted to transmit or aid in transmitting any account, description, picture, video, audio, reproduction or other information about any games.

Can I get free flu shots in New York?
Free flu shots are available from some business such as CVS, Rite Aid, Target and Walgreens in New York but may require Medicaid or an insurance plan to be free of cost. For free locations and updates, please contact NYCDOHMH or 311. Coming soon, you will be able yo use Google Maps to find locations as well.

How will my child be treated against the H1N1?
Your child will receive treatment against the H1N1 via flu shots or flu mist. Please note that flu mist may cause runny nose or nasal congestion, sore throat, and fever in some children.

Are flu shots available everyday?
No. Unfortunately, some locations that administer the vaccine are closed on Federal holidays so you will need to schedule accordingly. Also, if numbers exceed the capacity of the clinic, they may turn away those seeking treatment.

Will one vaccine help prevent the flu?
Yes but minors (usually those 10 and younger) may be required to get the vaccine twice, thirty days (30) days apart so keep this in mind if you plan to travel.

How do I get information if I do not have a computer at home?
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has put together some helpful information, which you can download here by going to your local libary or by calling 311. Those with mobile phones may also text “FLU” to “87000″ for information.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Everyone, specially if you have children. Definitely, if you are more than 55, suffer from any chronic condition like asthma or diabetes, have to take aspirin, etc… Everyone should get vaccinated. Period.

Why Should One Get Vaccinated?
An estimated half a million people have died in the US since 1957 of
flu-related conditions. In some epidemics in the past, 2 million people would die worldwide in one single year! And, not necessary sick people. But also young, strong, working people.

Besides, if you don’t get immunized, you can pass on the germ to the
your close ones. Your young children, your elderly parents, your
debilitated bosses and co-workers, your sick patients (if you have
any…) will be at high risk to become statistics themselves.

Last but not least, if you don’t get vaccinated some other person will sneeze on your face, or will kiss you, shake your hands, or share
his knife with you and give you the virus. The least which will then happen to you is to be sick (fever, cough, muscle pain, vomiting, etc…) for a whole week. Then, you will have to miss work (that’s OK). But you will also miss that wedding you really did not want to miss (and that is not OK).

What If You Were Vaccinated Last Year?
Yeah, but the virus changes its genetic code every year. It is like
the Camry. Same car, but different every year. So, you have to take
it again.

Can You Get Influenza From the Vaccine?
Not a chance. The virus in the vaccine is a killed virus. The only side effects of the vaccine are some muscle aches, and little fever for a day or two.

Important. There are a lot of respiratory infections manifesting
themselves with cough, sneezing, fever that you can develop during the
winter. Those are not caused by the influenza virus, though we call
them ‘flu’, by lack of better pop terminology. Remember, that the real
flu (influenza) is a serious infection which kills people, mostly
children and the sick and the elderly.

Can You Be Allergic to the Vaccine?
Unfortunately, you can. Mostly if you are allergic to eggs. So call
you doctor and/or go to the Emergency Room if after taking the shot
you develop a bad rash, real high fever, a rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing… You are not supposed to. But, allergic reactions to the flu vaccine are very, very rare. Not an excuse for anyone to skip a yearly shot.

Can This Shot Save Your Life?
For real, it can. Every year it saves millions of lives. It may have saved your life last year. You just did not know about it, because you had your shot. And remember, more than anything, it protects your child.

The State of New York recognizes your foreign driver license as long as you remain a resident of the nation (ie. Canada, England, etc) that issued the drivers license.

You do not need to have a New York State driver license to drive in State of New York unless you plan to become a resident of New York.

If you got the ticket AFTER July 7, 2008 (the same day the MTA raised their fare evasion to US$100.00) then you will NOT get any points if that was your only infraction.

You see, you should not receive a ”moving violation ticket” for blocking the box because you are NOT moving.

You are actually parked so you will be giving a type of “parking ticket” which carries no points but instead of paying US$55.00 for the ticket, the fine has been increased by US$60.00 and now costs US$115.00.

If you were very unfortunate to have gotten trapped in the box, you were most likely following too close so you should not do so in the future.

If you were following too close, a traffic cop could give you a second ticket for tailgating (which is a moving violation) if they were watching you procede down the block.

If you feel you are NOT guilty of blocking the box, here is some helpful info to know which can save some time.

The increased fine went into effect yesterday on Monday, July 7th, 2008 and offenders are subject to a summons and/or arrest which is punishable under the laws of New York and New Jersey under code 1050.4 of the MTA NYC Transit’s Rules of Conduct.

Effective July 7, 2008,

Where do you pay your fine on the MTA summons? You may call TAB (Transit’s Adjudication Bureau) at 347-643-5805. The Transit’s Adjudication Bureauis the adjudication unit for summonses issued to individuals alleged to have violated New York City Transit’s Rules of Conduct and will assist anyone wishing to have a summons (or ticket) adjudicated or make a payment for a fine in person.

Please note that if a court appearance is required, you may not be able to make any payments to settle the summons. Instead of of evading a fare, you may want to use MetroCards for multiple riders.

By train:
Take the uptown 1, 2, or 3 train from the 7th Avenue side of Penn Station one stop to 42nd Street Times Square. When you are  there, safely go up the steps and then make a right at the head of the platform. Next, transfer to the 42nd Street Shuttle or 7 train to Grand Central.

Bus:
You can get the M4 and Q32 to pick you up on far side on 32nd Street and 7th Avenue which takes you to Madison Avenue/42nd, 45th, 47th Streets which is all part of Grand Central and Grand Central North.

Taxi:
Take this if you have lots of luggage to deal with and if time is of the essence to get to Grand Central. There are locker storage facility close to Penn Station & the Port Authority and also at Times Square & Grand Central in case you decide to take the option for bus and trains and do not want to carry your luggage.

This is where a taxi cab with a professionally installed car seats will come in handy for you. You grab a taxi from the airport (or wherever in New York you are) and it takes you to where you need to go. It is very convenient but there is one problem.

According to a brochure from New York State Department of Motor Vehicle, “Seat belt use is not required in taxis or livery vehicles” but encourages parents (and guardians) to bring their own car seats.

A child, who is seven (7) and older, is allowed it sit in your lap and it is always a good idea to use the seat belts no matter the age of your child as your driver can do his or her best to get you safely to your destination only to be struck by another vehicle during the trip.

For safety,  do not utilize one seat belt restraint for you and your toddler. Doing so, your body will aid in crushing your toddler in an accident (or sudden stop by the driver) as the toddler will be acting as a cushion for you in between the straps.

When selecting a car seat, it should be a “federally-approved child safety seat” that can be “attached to a safety belt or universal child restraint anchorage (LATCH) system.”

Currently, there are four basic types of child safety seats available: infant, convertible, forward-facing only and booster. The car seat you should use depends upon the weight and height of the child. It is very important to read the child safety seat manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

Most mothers when they a planning to travel to or from New York use one of these portable car seats. One that stands out is the Eddie Bauer Portable Car Seat Bryant Collection as it weighs approximately 4 lbs (less than a bag of sugar) and fits easily in a bag or under a stroller.

Some owners say is a “great travel seat” while others say its “terribly over priced.” Below is one of the car seat reviews that was made by a New York City mother.

This portable car seat is just what I was looking for. Something to help us keep our son seated and more secure when traveling by city Taxi for short trips. It’s light weight and I can take it with me and put it under the umbrella stroller until we get into a “Taxi.” Hooking it up properly hasn’t been that easy. It takes me more than a few minutes with my 25 month old waiting inside the Taxi or if my husband is with me… He is holding him while I hook it up. We both read all the directions, and it’s a bit tricky to make sure you do everything in the correct order… So that the straps are snug and not to loose or to tight. As well as in the right position to fasten it when child is ready to sit in it. Taking it out of the Taxi is easier and faster to do. I’m pretty good at these kind of things.. But every time.. I feel like it doesn’t get any easier to do. You need to have a cab driver who will wait for you to get it set up. Then, it worked very well. My son likes to sit in it. He say’s car seat. And the one day we didn’t use it for a very quick ride…. He sat still the whole time and didn’t stand up. So it had an impact and reminded him that he needs to sit in the Taxi. ( we use a regular standard size car seat for our car and longer trips ).

Once you purchase your federally-approved child safety seat, practice installing it into a vehicle as this will help you to save time in installing it into a taxi so you do not incur any long waiting times from the driver.

If you do not have a car of your own, see if your neighbour or local car dealership will let you do so, especially in a vehicle used often by taxis and livery companies.

If you are heading to the State of New York by plane, you will not be able to use your portable car seats on the flight unless it is FAA approved and displaying a sticker. If it is FAA approved but missing the sticker, the flight attendant may restrict you from using it on the flight. If  your child safety seat is valid for the flight, please use it during takeoff, landing and during turbulence on the flight.

While in New York, should you need to use the subway to supplement your trip with the taxi cab, please note that the subways are equipped with a ”service entry gate” should you have a stroller as well. Please take care in using the service entrygate and heed the instructions to avoid a fine.

The Torch
The torch is the highest point on the Statue of Liberty and access is not allowed by all visitors. Only employees are permitted into the torch section to where high-powered lamps are that illuminate from sunset to sunrise.

The Crown
Below the torch is the crown and for safety reasons, it has been restricted since September 11, 2001 and will reopen once again July 4, 2009 before the 8 year anniversary of the collapse of the World Trade Center. When visiting the crown (which costs US$3.00 extra requires aand reservation) please be aware that the elevator may be out of service and you will need to walk 168 flight of steps.

The Tablet
Naturally, you can not enter the tablet which bears the inscription JULY IV MDCCLXXVI (July 4, 1776) which commemorates the United States Declaration of Independence.

The Monument
You can get into the Monument for free but admission requires you to make a reservation in advance and two security screening. The first will be going to the island and the second is before entering the Monument. While inside, please refrain from eating, drinking, or smoking as it is not allowed inside. To do so, please see the designated areas on the Island.

The Grounds
To get access to the grounds, one must take the ferry as private boats are not allowed to dock at Liberty Island. Please arrive at least 30 to 45 minutes before your schedule departure time so you have sufficient to be checked by security. Once you reach the Island,  please seek out the designated areas if you wish to eat or smoke.

The Docks
Private boats are not allowed to dock on Liberty Island. You are free to pass by in your private boat or on the Staten Island Ferry (which has been free since 1997) and take photos or videos. From Manhattan it takes up to 15 minutes (more with a Ellis Island stop) to reach the docks so have enough film to capture the view along the way.

The Waters
The Staten Island Ferry, which can be obtained from the South Street Ferry Terminal, gives you a nice and free view of the Statue of Liberty but to get to Liberty and Ellis Island so you can walk around, you will need to obtain tickets for the ferry which will safely take you over to the Island. These can be obtained from Battery Park in New York and Liberty State Park in New Jersey using these easy to follow directions.

To waive the fee for the ferry (click for current prices) which is US$12.00 for an adult, US$10.00 for a Senior and US$5.00 for a child, you may purchase the New York Pass which gives the holder free admission to the ferry along with other New York City attractions.

Also, if you plan on visiting both Liberty Island and Ellis Island, try to arrive at security early in the day (by 1:00 PM is suggested) so you are not told that there isn’t sufficient time for you to visit both Islands.

Fun Facts:
The Statue of Liberty was once a lighthouse guiding ships at night but lamps were not powerful and over time had to be upgraded.

On July 4, 1884, the Statue of Liberty was presented to the United States by France as a symbol of friendship and liberty that both France and the US shared and arrived in New York in pieces a year later on June 17, 1885.

The Statue of Liberty (which outer coating is made of copper) gets about 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) of precipitation (from rain, sleet, hail, snow and other forms of water falling from the sky) each month from the elements and that helps turn it green or “oxidize.”

The Statue of Liberty is officially titled “Liberty Enlightening the world” and faces Southeast towards the docks making “her” a welcoming symbol for those on sea vessels entering the harbor.

January and February are less crowded at the Islands while July and August are the busiest months.

Elhajo Malick Dieye, at the age of 30,  jumped 5 stories to his death from the pedestal in May of 1997 afer he was upset that the crown was closed.

Access is not permitted on December 25th as it is closed to the public.

Walking:
Short on cash? Need some exercise? To walk from New York Penn Station to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, you will need to walk West towards 11th Avenue along West 34th Street where the M34 bus will also be travelling.

Walking on average takes about twenty (20) minutes from New York Penn Station and depending on the time of year, you may have a lot of company as people young and old will be attending there for events such as the New York Anime Festival or the New York International Auto Show. If you will have heavy luggage or is running very late, you may want to leave it at a locker near Penn Station (which requires identification) so make sure you have identification before going for service.

Bus:
Are you and your guest unable to walk twenty (20) minutes from New York Penn Station? If so, a bus will be perfect for you. Buses that are heading westbound from Penn Station to the Javits Center are the M16 bus and the M34 bus.

The trip will take less than ten (10) minutes (depending on traffic along with the weather) to get to 8th Avenue and West 34th Street. For a smoother travel, it is best to utilize the M34 bus.

Subway:
Unfortunately, there isn’t subway service from Penn Station, New York to Javits Center. The subway does stop at New York Penn Station but you will have to find an alternate method (walking, bus, shuttle or taxi) to get to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

Taxi:
If you have the funds to spare, taxi cabs are also available for your trip and the driver will be very happy that you are considering them for the 5 minute trip. To get a taxi, it is best that you use the Penn Station’s main entrance at 7th Avenue and 32nd Street so you can obtain one very easily. Entrances for the Javits Center are at located at 35th, 36th, 37th, and 38th Streets on 11th Avenue so let your driver know to drop you close to one.

Shuttle:
Are you coming from the airport? If so, you may reserve an airport shuttle that will take you to Penn Station or directly to the Javits Center. Entrances for the Javits Center are at located at 35th, 36th, 37th, and 38th Streets on 11th Avenue so let your driver know to drop you close to one.

Driving:
Are you driving and need parking for the Javits Convention Center? Unfortunately, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center does not have on-site parking but if you can not leave your vehicle at home, off-site parking is available for you.

The Hostel
So what is a hostel? A hostel has all the same letters as hotels but it does not have all the high prices of a hotel which will be easier on your pocket and provides budget-oriented accommodation where you, the guest, can rent a bed, for two (2) to three (3) weeks. At times, a bunk bed in a dormitory is given and guests shares a bathroom, lounge and sometimes the kitchen.

The Rooms
The rooms can be mixed (both male and female) or single-sex, although private rooms (at a higher rate) may also be available. Hostels are generally cheaper for both the owner/operator and you, the occupant.

The Jobs
Need a job? A few hostels employ their long-term residents (a commitment period may be required) as desk clerks or as housekeeping staff in exchange for free accommodation so if you are planning to move to New York, a hostel can be your ticket in finding a quick job and boarding. If an international visitor, you may may denied if you visit using the visa waiver program.

The Requirements
Here are a few hostels that you may want to check out. Before reserving, be sure that you meet the minimum age requirements for the room & will not need to stay longer the the hostel permits. Well, at the toll both, a photo of the vehicle, including the license plate, will be taken and sent to the owner of the vehicle so if the vehicle is yours, you will be seeing the toll fee and fine pretty soon.

Borrowed from a friend or relative? Unfortunately, they will be the one to receive it and will be coming to get you later on to pay it and the same goes for rental companies.

Once the rental company receives the info, they will contact the state and let them know who the offending party is and have it sent to the info on the drivers license they collected.

Occasionally, the rental company will give the state the wrong driver information so you could in fact receive a fine for another driver so it is best to hold on to your rental agreement for at least a year should you rent a vehicle. This way, you can fight it in court. To skip going to court (if time permits), contact the rental company immediately and let them correct it if you are not the guilty party.

Well, do not panic as it fairly easy and inexpensive to get there. The first thing you will need to do is find the Airtrain JFK. You can find the Airtrain JFK at the terminal and this will take you to Jamaica Station.

It will run mostly elevated to Jamaica Station except for run between Station C: Federal Circle and the airport loop.

The fare on the Airtrain is (currently US$5.00) less than US10.00 and the trip will take appromimately 20 minutes.

Once you safely reach to Jamaica Station, exit the Airtrain and transfer to the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) where you can take trains (heading westbound) to Penn Station, NY. The trip from Jamaica Station to Penn Station should also take approximately 20 minutes as well.

A one way off-peak ticket on the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) from Jamaica to Penn Station, NY is (currently US$5.25) less than US10.00.

If you’re traveling during peak hours the fare is (currently US$7.25) less than US$10.00 and if you’re traveling on the weekend the fare is (currently US$3.25) less than US$5.00.

As you can see, expences (and requirements) are very high for taxi cab drivers so if a driver worked longer hours, their income would increase drastically. Often hired (or corporate) drivers have a schedule of 8 to 12 hours and often try to do more even though it is tiring on their bodies and risk their safety late at night.

A driver’s bottom line is affected by bus and train strikes. During strikes, drivers tend to get more customers who are unfamilar in getting around without the use of  public transporation or those visitors to New York needing to get to the airports.

Unfortunately, an increases in gas prices, tolls, maintenance and traffic fines (speeding, parking, failure to maintain) can also affect their bottom line.

Do you still want to become a driver? If so, classes are available at LaGuardia Community College so if you are at least 19 (18 for corporate; 19 individual) years of age with a Class A, B, C, E or will upgrade a D driving license and have a relatively clean driving record, is a citizen or legal resident of the United States and dedicate 36 hours per week driving, you can get started in driving a taxi in New York State.

Passport Copies. Coming to New York where you have to use a passport? Well, make sure you make copies (the pages with all the identifying info) and keep the copies safe and separate from the original passport. If you loose the passport, you can go to a consulate to have it replaced and have the copies to show to help speed up the process.

Government ID. Banks, jobs, nightclubs, storage lockers and other places will want to make sure you are who you say you are so have (photo) identification handy. For identification that can only be obtained in your country and in person, get them ahead of time to avoid delays. Have you made a copy of your passport as yet? Now is the time to do so and these as well.

Pacemaker Identification. If you have an implanted pacemaker, it is wise to take along your Pacemaker Identification ID/Card. This will aid in an health emergency along with the screening at the airport.

Your Medication. This will save you from hunting down a local pharmacy to get what you need. A pharmacy might be open 24/7 but may not have your medication in stock. Remember, it is your health. If your medication is liquid, be sure to talk to your airline in advance.

Prohibited Items
Is there any harm in bringing a gift for my friends and relatives? Well, some items are restricted for both carry-on and checked luggage while others are not so before packing up, make sure the read over prohibited items list.

Wrist Watch. One of the most asked questions asked to New Yorkers is “What time is it?” Having a watch will help you keep time especially if you have to take medication, catch public transportation or participate in an event.

A Coat or Jacket. New York has a lot of tall buildings that block out the warm sun. While taking a stroll after October, you may feel the chill from breeze that blows through the city.

Heavy Sweater. It can be very cool here in New York as it gets closer to December, especially at night, so bring a heavy sweater if you don’t like the cold. Most flights, buses and trains have the air cranked up very high so this will help you on your visit.

Boots. Snow is a beautiful thing but it can land you on the bottom in the blink of an eye so during winter, have comfortable “winter shoes” for walking to see the sites and to keep your toes warm and from slipping. Some clubs will not let you in with boots so keep this in mind if you need to go clubbing.

Comfortable Shoes. Instead of being cramped up in a bus or train, wear some comfortable shoes and go exploring. This will let you save on transportation cost.

Batteries. Your electronics runs on batteries. Try to have an extra set with you especially if using the flash on a camera. This will help you save time in hunting down compatible batteries in New York so you do not miss getting the perfect shot. While using you camera, please note that some attractions have camera restrictions which you will need to follow so your camera does not get taken away and in some cases, removal from the attraction without a refund.

Film or Memory Stick. If you have a digital camera and the camera memory is small, have a memory stick on hand. Since memory sticks differ, this will prevent you from buying an incorrect one on your trip or not having one at all if the store is closed. Please note that some attractions have camera restrictions. For non-digital cameras, have film handy.

Cell Phone. If the trains are on strike, derailed, or is having signal problems you can call for a taxi cab or one of the shuttles for New York City to get you to the hotel or back to the airport for your flight. Just make sure you password protect it in case you loose it.

Travel Bags. Why carry your heavy suitcase around? Have a small travel bag to carry around with you. Remember to test the zippers and make sure they are working right. Things get lost due to bad zips. Also, travel bags are small and easy to leave at locker storage facilities should you need to free your hands while walking and exploring. If you plan to do a lot of shopping, have one that has wheels so it can be pulled when heavy.

Space Bags. Why pay extra for additional luggage to your airline? Fold your clothes neatly and place into bags that reduce space then throw them into your suitcase. Doing so will also let you carry around less so you can take the trains and bus easily from the airport. A benefit is the items are also protected in the bags so if your flight has to may a water landing, the contents will be protected.

Locks. Buy a lock for your bags. If you have to leave it at locker storage or on a charter/tour bus (which you shouldn’t do as the bus may leave) for a second or two it will be a little safer from pokers.

Sunglasses. Protect your eyes in the winter from the sunlight reflecting off the snow and take cool pics for your social networking accounts.

Electronic Charger. Fully charge your electronics (MP3 player, cell phones, etc) then safely tuck your cords away to avoid damages. Since the chargers has metal pieces, keep it near to you if it isn’t being checked for the flight.

Prepaid Phone Card. Your cell phone reception or plan may not be as great as you think or the provider claims so have one handy. Often, one has a local plan and higher rates for calls outside their state or country. When in your room. use these instead of running up you hotel bill.

GSM SIM Card. It can be difficult locating a International SIM Card here so take one on your trip. This way you know it is compatible.

Cash. If you plan to move to (NYC) New York City and came for a visit and you find out that your local bank does not have a branch in the State of New York, you can use the cash to open up a bank account. Doing so will help cut ATM fees which can be US$4.00 per transaction. For a food budget, prepare to spend up to US$100.00 per day.

Counterfeit Pen. If you are exchanging currency on the black market (on the street) instead of the banks, this will help to make sure you are getting genuine bills so someone does not put one over on you. Also, if you are making purchases in Chinatown, you can check the validity of your currency.

Pen and Paper. These are available in your hotel room as well but if you are at the airport or train station needing to get to your hotel and forgot your way, it will come in handy to write the info down from a good Samaritan.

Ethernet Cable. Need to reserve your flight back home or browse the Internet on your trip? Well, your lodging may not have Wi-Fi service so having an Ethernet cable handy with your laptop will make sure you can surf the web. Most lodging will have an Ethernet cable in the room but if its damage, it will save you time on waiting for a replacement.

Toothbrush & Toothpaste.
Did you forget to pack your toothbrush or toothpaste? If you have sensative teeth or is accustomed to a certain brand or flavor, it is a good idea to have a travel size handy that meets airline safety requirements. While in New York, you can pick up four pack of toothbrush and toothpaste for US$1.00 each at the Dollar Tree.

Ear Plugs
Are you a light sleeper? If your room is close to the elevator, ice machine or overlook a busy street or parking lot, ear plugs may come in handy. Just make sure you can hear the safety alarms in the room and hall in an emergency.

Eye Covers
Need to sleep on the flight? Eye covers can help if someone next to you has the lights on reading. If your room is near Times Square in New York where it is city ordinance for all business to display illuminated signs, then these will help so you can get a good nights sleep.

A Travel Buddy. If you are very under the age of 18, it is good idea to have a travel buddy. It may be cheaper to travel alone but it is a good idea to travel with a buddy when possible. While on your trip or visit, keep an eye on them and let them do the same for you while you explore the city or go on bus tours.  Also, an older travel buddy will be able to make reservations with a hotel should you not staying with any friends or family in New York.

Well, hospitals give you a souvenir birth certificate but its not legally accepted as proof of age or citizenship. After the hospital (unless you did it yourself) process it, the papers will be filed with the New York City Office of Vital Records.

The birth certificates for newborns are automatically mailed approximately four (4) weeks after birth and the New York City Office of Vital Records is unable to provide information on the status of your certificate before then to you.

Please note that the hospital must forward the information for processing so any forwarding delays by the hospital will add to the processing time so follow up to make sure it was done.

By the way, the IRS requires that all children over the age of one have a Social Security number to be claimed as an income tax deduction so don’t forget to apply for a Social Security number as time rolls on. To make things easier, you do not have to apply separately for a Social Security card for your newborn if you apply at the hospital at the time of your child’s birth.

Later, if you need additional birth certificate copies, you can then request it by via the Internet, phone, mail or in person. If you will pick up in person, you need to see the info for first time visitors for further instructions.

The ESB hours are are 8:00am to 2:00am 7 days per week and the last elevators goes up at 1:15am. To avoid the crowds, being at the ESB early in the morning (between 8:00am and 10:30am) would do the trick for you as most visitors to New York City have flights leaving from New York early in the morning and would be heading to the airport during that time.

Crowds tend to gather at the ESB after 11:00am (for the views and NY Skyride) so it is best to try and reach there earlier. If visiting during the busy hours, feel free to call 1.877.NYC.VIEW (1-877-692-8439) or 212.736.3100 to check on current wait times and hours. The Empire State Building reserves the right to close the Observatory early on very busy days so please keep that in mind.

You may encounter a line at the front door during busy times (shortly after 11:00am) at the Empire State Building due to the fact that they limit the number of guests allowed in the lobby. This is normal and is done for everybody’s safety.

If you have The New York Pass, for example, you may pass by the ticket lines and proceed directly to the high speed elevator line.

The Empire State Building is also on the list of Romantic Places in New York and with its 2:00am closing, is perfect of couples to watch the “city that never sleeps” come alive at night.

First, ask yourself, “Do I really need to move to NYC?” If you answered no or is unsure then vacation in New York City until you are sure. On your visit, here are a few things to bring to New York City.

Second, ask yourself, “Where am I going to live?” If you don’t know where, you better start hunting for an apartment.

Third, ask yourself, “What happens when I need help?” If you don’t know then, you will have to start looking for friends in NYC. A great start is to visit the New York Forum.

Fourth, ask yourself, “How am I getting there?” You have to save up to pay for your moving expense and storage.

- January, the weather is cold and since a lot of people do not like the cold and will skip visiting New York, most times you can find great airline bargains.

February
- February, the restaurants are full for Valentine’s Day and so are the theatres. If you plan to visit New York during this time, it is best to reserve your hotel and restaurant in advance.

March
- March, the weather gets warmer (with temperatures above freezing) with fewer crowds around the city giving you the opportunity shop and visit the sites.

April
-April, the weather can be rainy and cool but fun nonetheless. If you are travelling with a mate, have a nice picnic in the park.

May
- May, the weather is great but does not offer a lot of summer activities though. Now is the time to get to know the city and learn how to use the public transportation should you decide to move here.

June
-June, the weather will bring “summer like” temperatures and will draw a lot people needing to see free concerts and films. The temperatures are nice so you will see people out jogging and training for the upcoming Marathon in November.

July
-July, you will start to see a peak with the temperature but it will be comfortable and bring concerts galore. Hotel and airfare will rise and start to fall after the Forth of July.

August
-August, the weather is still perfect for all your outdoor activities. Occasionally, you may experience a little rain but it won’t ruin your fun. Keep an umbrella handy and take on the city.

September
-September, you will get hit with the heat and higher prices but you avoid most of the summer tourist crowds. Crowds you may see are from students on field trips with their teachers.

October
-October, the city has great weather for visiting even though it can get cold. Prices will begin to climb even more for the upcoming ING Marathon and Thanksgiving Parade.

November
-November, it is time for walking and Shopping! Shopping! Shopping! Thanksgiving is also right around the corner along with the NYC ING Marathon, the tree ceremonies and other activities.

December
-December, will bring in the holiday season. If you don’t mind the crowds wishing to see snow and the holiday tree,  visit and help bring in the New Year.

In New York, you will be doing alot of walking from place to place and climbing stairs to use the subway so be sure to have comfortable shoes to help in your exploration.

While at the airport, you will be asked to remove your footwear so plan to have footwear that can slip of easily to save time getting to your flight. If possible, wear sandals then put on your shoes or boots after you cleared security.

As a rider, you should know that dollar bills, pennies, and half-dollar coins are not accepted on MTA Buses. When poossible, riders should try to use MetroCards which provide savings on travel.

A work permit.
A work permit is a certificate that allows children (minors) to work in the State of New York. In many US States, the age that you need to be to obtain one is sixteen (16) years old but in New York you can obtain one at the age of fourteen (14). Once you obtain the paperwork, will need your parents (or legal guardian) to sign it.

In most cities, the work permit is obtained through the local schools so it is important to speak with an official there as soon as possible before the school goes on an extended break.

Can you obtain a waiver since your parents (or legal guardian) will not approve it? No! All minors under 18 must have a employment certificate or permit, however, it is not required for jobs such as a golf course caddy or baby sitter where you need to be at least fourteen (14) years old.

For covered employees, the New York State Minimum Wage rate is US$7.25 per hour as of July 24, 2009. This amount may be modified based upon a number of factors.

For example, Food Service workers (ie. waiters & waitresses)  who earn at least US$2.55 per hour in tips can be paid at a minimum wage rate of US$4.60 per hour.

Also, different rates exist for other types of service employees, specified within a set of regulations called a “Wage Order“, which addresses the unique aspects of each industry or occupation.

Is your tip consider part of your wage? An employer can consider tips as part of of your wages, but must pay at least US$2.13 an hour in direct wages. If your tips combined with the employer’s wage of US$2.13 per hour do not equal the hourly minimum wage, then your employer is required to make up the difference according to the Fair Labor Standards Act.

You must pick up the items from a library in the system that owns the materials and return borrowed items to any branch of the library system from which it was borrowed. For example, you must return items borrowed from a Brooklyn Public Library to any other Brooklyn Public Library branch; you may not return these items to an NYPL or Queens Library branch.
